Dave Eresian in the park - more from Xuxa's latest party.com

Dave Eresian sings a specialty of his.

Another Golden Gate Park samba family reunion

Xuxa just won't quit -- he's throwing welcome back and going away parties even when he's neither leaving nor returning. These gatherings are one of the reasons why San Francisco and the Bay Area at large have such a tight community of musicians, dancers, and fans. Festa sempre, Xuxa!

California Brazil Camp 06 -- space still available

The experience of California Brazil Camp is hard to overestimate -- simply put it will be a "peak experience" for anyone who likes Brazilian music or dance. Week 2 (Session Two: August 28- September 3) still has a few spots available and I highly recommend it because of two "firsts" --

1. Marcos Suzano, the guy who more or less invented modern pandeiro technique, will be teaching there for the first time.

 2. Returning instructor Jovino Santo Neto has a new project this year, putting together a gafiera big band ensemble and putting on a dance show at the end of camp.

Another treat will be mandolinist Mike Marshall teaching the bandolim class.

Senzala Restaurant in Sunnyvale

Just ate lunch at a new Brazilian restaurant, Senzala, in Sunnyvale. Capoeira theme on the walls -- apparently the owners also started Capoeira of San Jose  -- and samba on the video system. A large space, I hope they can keep the business coming in to stay around. The food was tasty, but churrasco fans note that they don't have an authentic Brazilian grill. Still, they offer several entrees and sandwiches, and seem to be organizing some music events for their stage. Probably will be a great place to watch world cup games in June, too!

Os paralamas hit SF

Folks, if you missed Os Paralamas do Successo last Tuesday in San
Francisco, you missed a great Brazilian pop moment. Ska, reggae, and
rock dominated -- not samba.

Their songbook is thick and rich, allowing the band to plow through
number after number, eventually working the packed crowd at The
Mezzanine into a bit of a frenzy. Singer Herbert Vianna (in a
wheelchair following the crash of his ultralight plane in 2001) was
cool and calm, only occasionally flashing a smile, but often
emotional. (Patriotic ferver before the world cup seems to be running
high.)

Perhaps because I was indifferent to the new rock-only material, I
thought things improved greatly toward the end with everyone in the
room was swept up in the swinging, ska-driven numbers. By the way, the
crowd was virtually all Brazilian -- apparently this well-known pop
group remains unknown to Americans, even in a hip place like SF.
