learn that pandeiro

There are plenty of ways to learn the intricate art of pandeiro and one of the best locally is to work with Bobby Wallace. He'll be offering an Intermediate class soon, he tells me. Here's his latest message:

Hello Samba and Rhythm friends:

There is one slot left in the four-week Beginning

Pandeiro class starting 2/6/06 in Oakland, CA.  The

details of the class, and class description, are

below.

I'll be offering a second Beginning Pandeiro class in

March, details to follow.

'Samba Schools of the World' Map In Progress

Well, it's a first step -- I've entered the rough location of about a dozen samba schools into a Google-based map. For some reason the underlying mapping system only accepts US addresses at the moment and doesn't even display international cities on the map. (It would be a sad map of international samba schools if even Rio's schools aren't listed!) But if you want to try to add a samba school, please feel free to do so here:

Soggy Fanatics Take the Beach

It was just the hardcore fanatics on out on New Year's Day 2006 at SF's Ocean Beach... soggy_samba.jpg

Samba Molho

I hope nobody took home pneumonia. It was cold, wet, and gray. A few pilgrims in white arrived to pay tribute to Yemanja, and about an hour late, the hardcore bateria kicked and defied the light rain. New Year's Day Samba at Ocean Beach lives another year! Thank you Ken, Brad, Adolfo, both Davids, and everyone else -- we couldn't have done it without you. The audience of folks passing by, both of them, loved it.
